The I-25 Improved; Comanche to Montgomery project is the largest construction project in New Mexico recent history, a $278M investment, with construction expected to last through Spring 2027.

2026 PROGRESS

In 2026, crews will continue work in several areas, including:

  • I-25 Mainline: Crews continue to pave the outside lanes in the project area.

  • Montgomery Boulevard Bridge: A section of the Montgomery Boulevard Bridge over I-25 will be reconstructed in each direction including girder placement, deck pours, and a new new barrier-separated shared-use path.

  • Comanche Road Bridge: Construction of the Comanche Road Bridge is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Ramp connections to Comanche Road will be reconstructed to accommodate the new braided ramp configuration.

  • Frontage Roads: New northbound and southbound braided ramp bridges will be constructed. Frontage roads will be widened to the outside, and frontage road construction will be completed.

  • North Diversion Channel Bridge: The southbound Frontage Road North Diversion Channel Bridge will be reconstructed.

This work replaced aging infrastructure and improved safety and travel times for drivers now and in the future.

2025 WORK COMPLETED

In 2025, crews completed work in several areas, including:

  • I-25 Mainline: Crews completed storm drain installation and paved the outside lanes in the Comanche Road bridge area.

  • Montgomery Boulevard Bridge: Eastbound bridge beams were placed. Due to prioritization of the Comanche bridge, bridge supports remained empty for a couple of months.

  • Comanche Road Bridge: Bridge beams, deck panels, and the bridge deck were installed on the outer portions of the bridge. Traffic was shifted onto the newly built bridge section in spring 2025 so crews could begin reconstructing other sections of the bridge.

  • North Diversion Channel Bridge: Southbound and northbound bridge supports were formed, and the existing deck overhang was demolished. Bridge beams were set, and the new, widened bridge deck was placed in both directions.

This work replaced aging infrastructure and improved safety and travel times for drivers now and in the future.

PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS

I-25 Improved is a design-build project, meaning the design and construction will happen concurrently. This allows NMDOT and the contractor to include the most innovative and current construction solutions while ensuring a quality product.
