TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS

The I-25 Improved; Comanche to Montgomery project is the largest construction project in recent history, a $268M investment, with construction expected to last through Spring 2027. Check out what we accomplished in 2024!
2024 Progress
-
I-25 Mainline: Traffic was shifted to the inside lanes to allow reconstruction to begin on the outside lanes.
-
Montgomery Loop Ramp: The loop ramp at the Montgomery interchange was permanently closed as part of the reconfiguration efforts, and the old ramp was demolished.
-
Montgomery Boulevard Bridge: Work has been done on both the west and east sides of I-25. Piles have been driven on both east and west sides. Foundations and columns will be complete on both the west and east sides by the end of the year.
-
Comanche Road Bridge(s): At Comanche Road there are two bridges, one for the NB I-25 and one for the SB I-25. The demolition, and construction of foundations and supports have been on the outsides halves of the two Comanche Bridges.
-
North Diversion Channel Bridge: Crews began work on the North Diversion Channel bridge. Bridge support extensions, channel lining, and foundation work are complete in both the northbound and southbound directions.
Looking Ahead to 2025
In the coming year, crews will continue work on several areas, including:
-
I-25 Mainline: The goal is to complete the storm drain and pave the outside lanes by spring 2025 for the Comanche Road bridge area.
-
Montgomery Boulevard Bridge: Eastbound bridge beams will be placed; however, due to prioritization of the Comanche bridge, bridge supports may remain empty for a couple of months.
-
Comanche Road Bridge: Bridge beams, deck panels, and the bridge deck will be installed on the outer portions of the bridge. Traffic is planned to shift by spring 2025 onto the newly built bridge section so that crews can begin reconstructing other sections of the bridge.
-
North Diversion Channel Bridge: Southbound and northbound bridge support will be formed, and the existing deck overhang will be demolished. Bridge beams will be set, and the new, widened bridge deck will be placed in both directions.
-
This work will replace the aging infrastructure and improve safety and travel times for drivers now and in the future.
I-25 Improved is a design-build project, meaning the design and construction will happen concurrently. This allows NMDOT and the contractor to include the most innovative and current construction solutions while ensuring a quality product.
